About ITPGRFA

With more than 39,000 species of flora and fauna, the Philippines is the seventh richest country in the world in terms of species diversity and endemism. A range of mechanisms for conservation and protection has been established by the Philippine government but large portions of the country's biodiversity still remain outside the national Protected Area system, particularly those found within agricultural landscapes. With agriculture being the country's main driver of economic growth, agricultural activities expand continuously particularly within and along the edges of priority conservation areas. This is particularly critical in key areas of high biodiversity across five critical biogeographic regions in the Philippines: Luzon, Palawan, Negros-Panay, Mindoro and Mindanao.

Thus, in coordination with the UNDP-supported project "Partnerships for Biodiversity Conservation: Mainstreaming in Local Agricultural Landscapes" or BPP, this project is implemented: 1. to strengthen the conservation of plant genetic diversity through integration with landscape-level planning and decentralized government program-ming; and, 2. to develop a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources in three critical biogeographic regions (Luzon, Negros-Panay and Mindanao) in the Philippines).

The SAP will promote the mainstreaming or integration of biodiversity conservation in the agricultural production system, markets and other sectors to secure national and global environmental benefits. Its goal is to mitigate the loss of diversity in the target crops through the initiation of in situ conservation strategies. Rice, sweet potato, taro and yam are the key crops addressed by the project, considering their roles as either main or secondary staples in many parts of the Philippines.
